I’ve seen wave-power come and go like the tides, since the 1980s. Frankly, I’ve always been sceptical. But now there’s the world’s first fully operational wave energy plant, pumping 720kw annually. Its owners have just successfully retrieved the first unit for overhaul, and to learn how to make it better and bigger.
The firm is currently working in Cornwall, England, testing plans to float out ten larger units to generate 10mw megawatts of power. The test units pump water to a land-based hydroelectric unit. The newer models will create their power on-site, on the sea floor.
